Details
THE SMALLWOOD NOTEBOOKS
two lined note books, covered in brown paper and filled in with black ink (one only part filled)

From 1st January 1932 to 13th May 1941, Mr. Smallwood recorded in two volumes of a notebook, the hours worked by his team on each and every new model and refurbishment carried out by Britains, in the Machine and Toolroom of the Engineering department.

Starting with the 0 gauge Ticket Collector in 1932 and finishing with the Spitfire in 1941, the next empty page is inscribed "All Toy and Model work stopped, concentrate on munitions." (see lot 351.)

In between is a stream of evidence on esoteric models that never went into production, as well as how difficult it was to make each master, in terms of working hours, and exactly when boots were converted to trousers. What, we wonder, were "special order bob weight" and why did the Gas cylinders take 136 hours of work to make ?

Variations that might otherwise slip by may be guessed at from work on the Gig-wheel or Whimple-tree in 1936 or the Gnome with pipe in 1937 who required an additional 18 hours work.

The Notebooks are a fascinating record of the effort that went into creating and maintaining the vast production of figures that poured from the Britains factory at the height of its success. (2)
