Lot Essay
Winkelman & Van der Bijl was a wellknown workshop for ornamental ironwork, established by H.J. Winkelman in 1909. The firm cooperated with famous Amsterdam School architects and produced a large part of the ornamental ironwork for the Amsterdam Scheepvaarthuis. H.J. Winkelman himself designed clocks and fireplaces from circa 1920 onwards. The present offered lot was most probably bought at a specialized Winkelman-auction in 1933. The auction catalogue mentions various bronze clocks by artists like B. Richters and A. Remiëns but also a 'very attractive bronze clock with reclining chameleon'. One can learn from the estimate (the former Winkelman-prices) in the contemporary catalogue that this clock was twice as expensive as the other bronze artist's clocks. It is said that G.H. Lantman designed the enamelled dial.
