Lot Essay

According to a paper inscription on the back of the canvas written and signed by Albert Grenier, Etude de danseuse was painted in 1888 when Toulouse-Lautrec and Grenier were still sharing a studio. Working side by side they simultaneously painted the same model who posed as a ballerina in the present work. Albert Grenier was a fellow student of Lautrec's at both Bonnat's and Corman's studios.

This rapidly executed study displays a richly-hatched surface defining the contours of her body as well as casting a shadow on her skin. The compositional framing recalls that of Degas' characteristic close-ups of his subjects, often resulting in parts of the figure being cropped out of the picture plane.
