Lot Essay

William Morris planned that The Golden Legend would be the first book printed by the Kelmscott Press, although it was eventually the seventh produced. As early as 1890 Morris had bought a copy of the 1527 edition of the book which he counted among his favourite stories. When he produced the 500 limited edition books for the antiquarian bookseller Bernard Quaritch he was given 'absolute and sole control' over materials used and borrowed a copy of Caxton's 1483 edition from the Cambridge University Library for copy text. This was the first text printed by the Kelmscott Press to have original engravings by Burne-Jones and an engraved title.
