Further details
Alfred Hoare Powell (1865-1960) first met Ernest Gimson (1864-1919) during the late 1880's whilst working in the architectural offices of J D Sedding. Amongst Gimsons' fellow students were Ernest Barnsley, through whom Gimson came into contact with his brother Sidney, and established a lifelong friendship.By the 1890's, both Gimson and Sidney Barnsley decided that they did not wish to pursue a traditional career in architecture with a London office and inspired by William Morris and Philip Webb, they moved to the country and became totally involved in its working practices and traditions and set up a furniture workshop. Alfred Powell was also inspired to move to the Cotswolds around 1905 after visiting his friends, and became an important part of the craft community at Sapperton. It was during this time that Alfred, and his wife, Ada Louise Powell (1882-1956) established links with the firm, Wedgwood. Both were employed to design and paint onto Wedgwood ceramics, which were sent to them as blanks in the country, and returned to the factory after the decoration had been executed. Their designs were inspired by nature, and the landscape and buildings of their surroundings. It is also interesting to note that they adapted some of their designs for painting on furniture made by Gimson, the Barnsleys and the late Peter Waals.
