The others are Sir Jack Hobbs, Sir Don Bradman, Sir Vivian Richards and Shane Warne. Born in 1936, Sobers played golf, soccer and basketball for Barbados and in 1953 first appeared for the island at cricket against the Indian touring team, aged 16. The following year he made his Test debut in the fifth Test against England at Kingston. Four years later, aged 21, he scored 365 not out against Pakistan at Kingston 1957/8. This was his first Test century, which continued into a triple century. He was a hero of the magnificent 1960-61 series in Australia. Lindsay Hassett described his century in the first Test at Brisbane as 'a truly great exhibition'. The series revitalised the international game and Sobers returned to Australia in 1961-62 to play for South Australia. He remains the only player to score 1000 runs and take 50 wickets in an Australian season, a feat he achieved twice during three summers for South Australia. In 1963-64 they won the Sheffield Sheild for the first time since the 1952-53 season. Sobers succeeded the great Sir Frank Worrell as captain of the West Indies. The first Test against Australia at Sabina Park, Jamaica, 1964-65, saw Sobers win his first Test as captain, giving the West Indies their first win over Australia at home. At the end of the series Bob Simpson presented the Worrell trophy to Sobers, beginning a record run of 39 Tests as captain until 1972 Sobers was also an inspirational captain for Nottinghamshire 1968-74. In his first year he entered the history books again when, against Glamorgan, at Swansea, he hit Malcolm Nash for six sixes in one six-ball over. In January 1972 he played an innings of 254 for the Rest of the World against Australia at Melbourne. Including two sixes and thirty three fours in 6 Hrs 16 Mts, at the MCG, his inningwas hailed by Sir Donald Bradman as, 'probably the best ever seen in Australia...the people who saw Sobers enjoyed one of the historic events of cricket...They were privileged to have such an experience'. On 1st January 1975 Sobers was knighted by the Queen in Barbados for his services to cricket. Sobers was the first cricketer to achieve the double of 3000 Test runs and 200 wickets. His first 93 Tests included 8,032 runs at 57.78; he took 200 wickets at 34.03 and held 109 catches. One of the greatest batsmen of all time, a marvellous new ball bowler, with three distinct but interchangable styles, and a brilliant fielder with sharp reflexes close to the wicket, Christopher Martin-Jenkins says of Sobers 'It is unlikely that one man will again possess so wide a variety of cricketing skill as 'Sir Gary' Lots 514 & 515 will be on view until the sale at Christie's South Kensington at 85 Old Brompton Road, South Kensington, London, from where the buyer must collect.
