Lot Essay

Jewellers captured the Sixties mood of iconoclasm in explosive, splintered shapes, and jagged, spiky contours, which rebelliously replaced the smooth outlines and traditions of the previous decade. Space-age clothing, pioneered by Courrèges, materialized from Paris as scientific developments began to astound and fascinate everybody. Contemporary jewellery designs introduced new subjects: satellites in celebration of the achievements of developments in space, and explosive themes reflecting contemporary concerns over atomic power. This new iconography was used with striking effect, poignantly reflecting the interests and spirit of the times.
