Lot Essay

Richard Bingham, 2nd Earl of Lucan married Lady Elizabeth Belasyse (d. 1819), formerly the wife of Bernard Edward Howard (later 12th Duke of Norfolk), third daughter and co-heir of Henry, last Earl Fauconberg in 1794 and was succeeded by his son, George Charles (see lot 36).
This enamel is taken after a drawing by Richard Cosway, R. A. (see lot 90). For Bone's preparatory drawing of this enamel, see R. Walker, 'Henry Bone's Pencil Drawings', The Walpole Society, LXI, 1999, p. 334, no. 325, illustrated fig. 141 (misread as after Zoffany).
A slightly smaller enamel version, dated 1808, is mentioned in Stephen Lloyd's exhibition catalogue Richard & Maria Cosway, Edinburgh, Scottish National Portrait Gallery and London, National Portrait Gallery, 1995-1996, p. 129, no. 183.
