Lot Essay

George Charles, 3rd Earl of Lucan, accompanied the Russians as a volunteer against the Turks in 1828 and succeeded the title as 3rd Earl in 1839. As commander of the Cavalry in the Crimean War (1853-1856) he passed on the disastrous order for the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava in 1854 and later fought at Inkermann. He was promoted to Field Marshal in 1887. He married Anne (d. 1877), daughter of the 6th Earl of Cardigan in 1829 and had issue.
Two other porcelain miniatures by Adèle Hoguer, both of English sitters, were sold in these rooms, 26 November 1986, lot 203 and 25 November 1987, lot 264.
