A FINE SWISS SPLIT-PEARL SET ENAMELLED MUSICAL GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH AN ENGLISH ENAMEL
by Jean-Georges Rémond & Cie, marked, Geneva, circa 1816, with the restricted warranty mark for gold, French departments 1809-1819 and inventory number 970, the enamel by Henry Bone, R.A. (1755-1834), signed and dated 1816
Rectangular box, the cover set with an enamel miniature depicting Juliet standing on the balcony in the moonlight, within a split-pearl border, the sides and base engine-turned with horizontal wavy reeding, the base furthermore engraved with flowerheads surrounded by black enamel clover reserves, all enamelled in translucent blue, bordered by white enamel stripes and broad blue enamel bands with scrolling taille d'épargne gold foliage alternating with white enamelled palmettes, the corners similarly enamelled, the base of the box containing a disc musical movement released by a lever at the rear side, the inside of the cover engraved with details of the miniature and initials 'A.J.C.K.'

Lot Essay

The enamel miniature, exceptionally painted on gold, is signed on the counter-enamel 'London Oct:r 1816. Painted by Hen.y Bone R.A. enamel painter in Ordinary to His Majesty, and Enamel painter to His R. H. the Prince Regent after the Original by Jn.o Opie R.A'.
A larger version, dated 1804, is in the Royal Collection (see Walker, supra).
