Lot Essay

The image of two confronted birds forming a roundel is one that has a very long history in Chinese weavings. It is seen for example in a Tang dynasty felt of the 8th century (Lorentz, H.A.: A View of Chinese Rugs from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Century, London and Boston, 1972, pl.27, p.68).
