Lot Essay
The present rug is a small version of a design which was a times woven in sizes up to 10m long (Christie's, London, 13 April 2000, lot 176). Typical of this later phase of production are the long curving leaves which curl back over themselves forming large long panels, combined with the looser weave. For other Cairene rugs in the sale see lots 25 and 54; the footnote to the second of these gives a fuller discussion of the group.
