The shaded tomato-red field with palmettes and rosettes issuing angular floral sprays and saz leaves around a rosette centrepiece, in a shaded tomato-red border of polychrome palmettes and and angular flowering vine flanked by serrated leaves between flowerhead stripes, outer reciprocal skittle-pattern stripe, scattered areas of repiling

Lot Essay

The present rug is a small version of a design which was a times woven in sizes up to 10m long (Christie's, London, 13 April 2000, lot 176). Typical of this later phase of production are the long curving leaves which curl back over themselves forming large long panels, combined with the looser weave.
