An impressive gold ground lacquer cabinet
19th Century
The doors and drawers decorated in iroe hiramakie and takamakie, gold foil, hirame and nashiji, with temple scenes, ho-o bird mon and landscape scenes, the shelves with ho-o birds among plum blossom, all bordered with gold gyobu nashiji, the silver mounts elaborately chased and engraved with peonies, the seperate lacquered stand with silver mounts, (some old wear and slight old cracks)

Lot Essay

It is accompanied with a letter dated 25 April 1950, stating that the cabinet was "made in Japan for The Japan - British Exhibition as a representative piece of Japanese craftsmanship, but was not finished in time for shipment to England.
It was purchased by the late Mrs. C H Bailey while on a visit to Japan in 1910/11 for ten thousand yen from: Samurai Shokai, Art dealers, Tokio, Yokohama."
