TWO JADE BELT BUCKLES
18TH/19TH CENTURY

The first is a triple, openwork belt-buckle of C-scroll design, comprising a gently arched rectangular plaque carved with two apertures, one on each side for the insertion of the hook section formed by an upturned stylised dragon-head, each jade section is carved on the reverse side with a slot for attachment; and the second buckle is formed by two square spade-like segments designed with lingzhi and narcissus spray in shallow relief, one carved with an opening for the insertion of its counterpart, both with side slots for attachment

Compare a Yuan dynasty example in the British Museum, illustrated by R. Rawson, Chinese Jade: from the Neolithic to the Qing, p. 345, which is the same form as the second belt buckle.
