A RARE KINRANDE EWER
16th century
Of flattened pear shape above a tall slightly spreading foot, the sides with a raised peach-shaped panel between the slender arched handle and long sinuous spout, enamelled in iron-red, green, turquoise, sepia and gilt with geometric patterns, rim chips and minor losses

Lot Essay

Variations of this distinctive group of kinrande ewer are mainly found in Japanese museums and collections. Several are in the Matsuoka Museum of Art, Tokyo, illustrated in Inaugural Exhibition, Selected Masterpieces of the Matsuoka Museum of Art, pp.80 and 81, pls. 75 and 76; and in Selected Masterpieces of the Matsuoka Museum of Art, Tokyo, 1984, col. pls. 78 and 79; see also S. Hayashiya and G. Hasebe, Chinese Ceramics, Tokyo and Rutland, 1966, pl. 82. Further two examples are in the Baur Collection, illustrated by John Ayers, The Baur Collection, vol.
