Lot Essay

This shape is after a Meissen original of circa 1763-1774 and some pieces from this service bear Meissen-style crossed swords on the underside. Compare the almost identical tureen and cover in the Mottahedeh Collection, illustrated by D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol. II, no. 572, p. 554, but with different birds. A pair of vegetable tureens and covers from this service was sold in our New York Rooms, 21 January 1999, lot 45; and a vegetable dish and cover was sold in the same Rooms, 21 and 22 January 1998, lot 33.
