Early 18th Century, possibly Lille, the musicians associated
Woven in wools and silks, depicting two maidens playing music within a formal garden with fountains in the background and a palace to the right, the borders decorated with flower bunches, quivers and ribbons, with a later blue outer slip, reweaving and patching, reduced in size, the border possibly associated
7 ft 4 in. (225 cm) high; 6 ft 11 in. (210 cm) wide

Lot Essay

The treatment of this subject can be likened to various designs by Lodewijk van Schoor (d. 1726) such as the series of the months, Seasons and Elements, one of which is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (E. Standen, European Post-Medieval Tapestries and Related Hangings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1985, vol. I, cat. 34, p. 221).
