Unsigned, Edo/Meiji Period (19th century)
With overhanging lid; the exterior with a roiro-nuri ground modelled with ripples, decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with waterweed and applied with a large carp in bronze with gold and shakudo eyes; the interior of the lid with a nashiji ground, decorated in gold, aokin, silver and black hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with a courtier-poet under a tree by a stream; the box with a brush-tray to each side and a central panel with an opening to take the inkstone (gold-lacquered rim) and suiteki [water-dropper] of gilt bronze nanako modelled with gourds and leaves and set in a gilt-bronze recess; the trays with gold hiramaki-e plant designs on a gold nashiji ground; the base nashiji, minor damage
