A SET OF SUZURIBAKO [BOX FOR WRITING-UTENSILS] AND RYOSHIBAKO [BOX FOR WRITING PAPER]
Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Both with rounded corners, the ryoshibako with a flush-fitting lid and the suzuribako with an overhanging lid; gold nashiji grounds; decoration in gold, aokin and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and togodashi-e with gold flakes and foil; the rims gold lacquer; the suzuribako with an interior frame holding a centrally-placed inkstone with a gold lacquer rim and a silver and gilt suiteki in the form of a handled kettle within a two-tier mount
The exterior of the ryoshibako with part of a palace building and the exterior of the suzuribako with an ushiguruma [courtly ox-cart], each surrounded by brushwood fences, maple trees, mountains, a mountain stream and stylised clouds; the interiors of the lids with poem-cards depicting the Rokkasen [Six poetic geniuses of the 9th century], each with a poem: Ariwara no Narihira, Sojo Henjo, Fumiya no Yasuhide, Ono no Komachi, Kisen Hoshi and Otomo no Kuronushi
