A NANBAN LACQUER TABLE
Momoyama Period (Late 16th/Early 17th Century)
The top with geometric borders of shell inlay and lacquer surrounding a central panel divided by a cruciform shape into four separate areas of typical Nanban-style decoration with birds flying among tachibana [Mandarin orange], kikyo [Chinese bellflower], kiri [paulownia] and maple, the two pairs of legs each descending from a vertical panel attached to the underside, joined above the scroll feet by a stretcher, the panels and legs also decorated with kikyo and vine tendrils and with areas of crushed shell, gilt metal fittings, some old damage
