A SHINOMI-NARI KABUTO [HIGH CONICAL HELMET] AND A MENPO
Edo Period (Late 17th Century)
The shinomi-nari [high conical] bowl of four russet-iron plates with the joins overlaid by separate decorative plates, the top of the bowl with a very small iron tehen-kanamono [finial] above a cap plate which reaches down to terminate in four short shinodare [spatulate plate], the simple brow plate cusped over the eyes which are embossed with eyebrows, the six-plate iron itamono Hineno-jikoro [close-fitting solid-plate neck-guard] and fukigaeshi [turnbacks to the neck-guard] covered with aogai [shell] and laced with pale mauve sugake-odoshi [spaced lacing]. Together with a russet lacquered iron menpo in typical Nara style with stiff hair moustache and chin tuft and soft metal teeth, four-lame yodarekake [throat defence] of black-lacquered hon kozane [true lamellae] laced with pale mauve silk in kebiki style [close-lacing], 19th century (2)
