A SUJIBACHI KABUTO [HELMET WITH STANDING FLANGES] AND A MENPO
Signed Munetoshi, Edo Period (18th Century)
The sixteen-plate russet-iron bowl of crisp well finished iron, each plate overlaid with simple iron bajo-shinodare [spatulate plates], the black-lacquered peak secured to the bowl by three simple gilded rivets and with applied iron clouds, mounted with a seven-tier mixed metal tehen-kanamono [finial], the peak and fukigaeshi [turnbacks to the neck-guard] covered with gilded leather and bearing an applied mon [crest], the black lacquered itamono ichimanju-jikoro [solid-plate neck-guard] with a lower plate textured black and gold and laced in white yosekake style [spaced lacing in groups], signed Munetoshi saku [made by Munetoshi]. Together with a russet-iron ryubu-style mask, the cheeks and chin embossed with wrinkles and a scrolling design, the detachable nose with hinges on both sides, well shaped otayori-no-kugi [pegs beneath the chin], hair moustache and chin tuft, the four-lame black-lacquered itamono yodarekake [solid-plate throat defence] laced with mid-blue sugake-odoshi [spaced lacing] (2)
