Afon Alaw, one of the last two vessels built for Hughes & Company's Windmill Line of Menai Bridge, was one of the best known Welsh windjammers during the final era of commercial sail. Launched from A. Stephen's yard in 1891, she turned in some very good passages under first Windmill and then Cambrian colours, the latter line having purchased her in 1904. Sold to the Norwegian S.O. Stray soon after the outbreak of the Great War and renamed Storebror, she was lost in the South Atlantic on 4th January 1918, whilst on passge from Beira to Montevideo in ballast.
Named for a notable British victory during the Peninsular War, Nivelle was built for Hardie's by Scott's of Greenock in 1897. A large steel four-master, she was registered at 2,430 tons and measured 292½ feet in length with a 43 foot beam. After a short but varied career, she was lost on Point Grande, near Antofagasta (Chile) on 30th June 1906 after a 45-day passage from Newcastle, New South Wales.
