After intensive schooling in Australia and England, he spent five years in the R.A.F. in Europe and the Far East. He painted as a war artist with the Army and Naval Coastal Forces of Great Britain. His travel and fieldwork has been extensive; Africa and the Indian Ocean, the Far East, the Himalayas, the Americas, Europe and the North and South Polar Regions. He has exhibited widely, at the Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Society of Wildlife Artists.
