Joseph Beck of the London firm of Smith, Beck & Beck was granted British patent number 2112 of 16 September 1859 for 'Improvements in Stereoscopes'. The view was open on three sides and was designed for viewing stereo pairs mounted in books, as a well as conventional stereographs. The stereoscope enjoyed enormous popularity with one of the earliest numbered examples numbered 109 suggesting that well over 3000 were produced.
