Collation: π6 [1,2,3]6 A-II6 KK-LL8 (π1 title with woodcut, π2r editor's preliminary verses and letter to Margrave Karl von Baden, life of Horace, table of metres), [1,2,3]/1 table, A1t text, LL7v woodcut printer's device, LL8 blank). 219 (of 220, without blank LL8) leaves, bifolium π3.4 misbound after LL6. 74 lines of commentary surrounding text, prefatory quire in double column, table in 3 columns, headline. Types: 22:89R, 23:64bR, 19:280G, 17:145G, 4:48G. 168 woodcut illustrations by the Terence Master, most printed from composite blocks, many repeated, woodcut printer's device (Davies 168). 2- to 3-line initials and paragraph marks alternating in red and blue, printed guide-letters. (Blue rubrication faded, small wormholes, many leaves reinforced at hinge, a few headlines shaved, light dampstain at upper margin of final quires, some light browning.) 18th-century mottled calf, gilt spine, green leather spine label (repairs at corners and spine ends, somewhat rubbed). FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Brunet calls it an editio princeps, since it is the first edition based on a German manuscript, whereas previous editions derived from Italian sources. Almost all copies which have appeared at auction in the past two decades have been imperfect; the present copy is complete, save for the final blank.
