BINDINGS, Papal -- A Sammelband, including Professio orthodoxae Fidei ab orientalibus facienda jussu sanctissim a domini nostri Urbani Papae VIII edita. Rome: Propaganda Fide Press, 1818, and other 19th-century printed and manuscript professions of faith. 8° window-mounted to 2° (393 x 270mm). Inserted in contemporary Roman red-brown morocco gilt BOUND FOR POPE PIUS VI (Giovanni Angelo Braschi, pope 1775-1799), front cover lettered 'Professiones Fidei' below papal arms (repeated on lower cover), outer roll, foliate tools at corners, flat spine lettered '87' (remains of paper label, lower front corner bumped, light rubbing at extremities).
Missale Romanum ex decreto sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum. [Rome: c.1775-1780]. 2° (408 x 275mm). Engraved title by Fr. Spierre after P. Berettinus Carlon, and two engraved plates, printed in red and black, printed music. (74 leaves only, some browning and spotting.) BOUND FOR POPE PIUS VI in contemporary Roman red-brown morocco, nearly uniform with the previous volume, title lettered within cartouche on upper cover and no. '8' at corner, gilt spine (traces of paper label at foot of spine, small wormholes at head, slight scuffing).

'66' on upper cover, flat spine gilt, gilt floral pastedowns (traces of paper label at foot of spine, a few stains, some wear at corners.)
Methodus servanda in comitibus generalibus ordinis minorum S. Francisci conventualium. [?Rome:] 1765. 2° (386 x 266m). Manuscript on paper, written in red and black, stencilled decoration. (Spotted, one sheet loose, stamp removed from last leaf.) Contemporary Roman gold-tooled panelled red morocco WITH ARMS OF POPE CLEMENT XIII (Carlo della Torre Rezzonico, Pope 1758-1769) at centre, no. '60' tooled on front cover, flat spine gilt (traces of paper label and light stain at foot of spine.)
Handsome examples of 18th-century papal bindings. Pope Pius VI revived the splendour of Leo X to Rome as a patron of public works, through his enlargement of the Vatican library, establishment of the papal graphic press, working with Cunego, Volpato, and Piranesi, and commencement of the building of the sacristy of St. Peter's. Sold as a group of bindings, not subject to return. (4)
