Engraved frontispieces, including one double-page, 5 maps, including 2 folding, 77 plates, including 53 folding, 18 double-page and one folding plate bearing 2 engravings, and illustrations. Woodcut illustrations, 4 full-page, head- and tailpieces and initials. (Variable light browning and offsetting on text, heavier in volume II, a few text leaves and some plates with old repairs or reinforcements, volume I with frontispiece trimmed and slightly wormed and title remargined at foot touching imprint.) Contemporary speckled calf, gilt spine compartments with morocco lettering-pieces and central flower vase tool (extremities lightly rubbed, a few scuff marks on boards and unobtrusive wormholes on the spines, hinges partially split), red-speckled edges. Provenance: early manuscript pressmarks on the upper pastedowns.

A RARE AND WIDE-RANGING ACCOUNT OF THE HISTORY, TOPOGRAPHY, COSTUME AND OTHER ASPECTS OF THE HOLY ROMAN AND OTTOMAN EMPIRES, covering a large area including the Balkans, the near and middle East, northern Africa, Europe and Russia. In the second volume, two leaf-sized engravings have been printed on one sheet which has been bound in as a folding plate, giving the volume the correct complement of 40 plates.
