Lot Essay

Edwin (1905-1975), seen here aged about 25, was born in Paris, the fourth child of Augustus and Ida John. He was described by his father as 'a tall hefty fellow full of confidence, humour and character'. His aunt Gwen who disapproved of his career as a middleweight boxer encouraged him to be an artist. He held at least two one-man shows (see M.L. Evans, Portraits by Augustus John, catalogue for the exhibition at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, 1988, pp. 36 and 49).
