Lot Essay

This painting, a gift from the artist to Lawrence Ives's wife, Daphne Cordelia, was acquired at the same time as five drawings including View from the Window of The Royal Technical College, Salford, The River Irwell at The Adelphi and three other drawings.

Lawrence Ives remembers many similar small works in Lowry's studio. When he acquired Entrance to the Tyne, Lowry first offered him some tiny studies of boats as a joke.
