Lot Essay

In 1938 Scott moved with his wife, Mary, to Pont-Aven in Brittany, to run the Pont-Aven School of Painting with Geoffrey Nelson. Scott was particularly interested in the association of the place with Gauguin and his followers, and among his models was an old woman who had sat in her youth for Gauguin. She is the subject of the present portrait (see R. Alley, op. cit., p. 4).
