Lot Essay

The artist explains the present painting in the 1989 Belgrave Gallery exhibition catalogue, 'I spent years photographing the fronts of lorries - they all had different faces. They had all the shapes I had ever seen in abstract art and I used to talk about them to students who were doing figuration. They thought there was nothing to see in lorries and I had to paint one or two myself to show them ... I put 'SS' on this one because on boats letters signify St Ives'.
