Inscription above the painting dated first day, ninth month, third year of the Tianqi era (1459).
Inscription describing the painting as that of a horse sent as tribute to the Ming Yongle Emperor in 1422, and which became one of the Emperor's favourite horses. The horse was named Ziyan (purple swallow), and a portrait of it was commissioned by the Emperor, who also had a poem composed in the Ziyan's honour. The poem was also inscribed above the painting.
