Lot Essay

The view of the Duomo was most probably painted from the gardens of L'Ombrellino, Alice Keppel's house in Florence.
Duntreath had been the home of Alice Edmonstone Keppel's family since 1445 and Violet spent many happy childhood holidays there, instilling in her a lifelong love for Scotland. Archibald Edmonstone was her uncle, the brother of her mother Alice Keppel.
