The normal spelling of this unit's title was "Sylhet". The battalion was raised as the 16th in 1824, and in 1826 its number was changed to 11th. Thereafter it underwent frequent changes of title, eventually becoming the 44th Goorkha Light Infantry and finally 1st Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles.
