Lot Essay

Gunner William Malkham was born in the Parish of Woodhouse, Sheffield and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in October 1885, aged 19 years. Arriving in India in March 1886, where he was posted to a Mountain Battery, he went on to witness active service in the Burma operations of 1885-87, and afterwards in the Sikkim and Samana operations of 1888 and 1891 (WO 100/74 refers under Markham). Returning to the U.K. in November 1895, he was discharged in October 1897.
