Corporal Daniel McLeod was born in the town of Huntly in Aberdeenshire and enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders at Fort George in May 1893, transferring to the Cameron Highlanders in July of the same year, joining his brother who was in the same Regiment. In November 1894 he was one of a draft from the Depot which joined the Regiment at Malta. He was posted to 'C' Company and promoted to Lance-Corporal that same month, becoming Corporal in June of the same year. In October 1897 the Regiment moved from Gibraltar to Egypt as part of the force sent to retake the Sudan and on 8.4.1898, at the Battle of the Atbara, McLeod was wounded so seriously in the arm that it had to be amputated. He died as a result of an operation 10 days after the Battle.
