Lot Essay

The plaster mould with traces of polychrome for the base of this pendant is recorded as being from the workshop of Alfred André (see A. Kugel, R. Distelberger & A. Bimbenet-Privat, Joyaux Renaissance, Une Splendeur Retrouvée, Paris, 2000, Annexe, pl. xxxvi-i).

Another very similar version of Europa and the Bull attributed to Alfred André was formerly in the collection of Maurice de Rothschild in Paris and sold by Duveen to P.A.B. Widener. It is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington (see R. Distelberger, et.al., Western Decorative Arts, Part I, Washington, 1993, pp. 288-90).
