BIBLE, Czech -- Biblia Bohemica. Prague: [Printer of the 1488 Bible (Johann Kamp?)] for Johann Pytlik, Johann? Severin, Johann von Störchen, and Matthias vom weissen Löwen, August 1488.
Chancery 2° (306 x 211mm). Collation: a-g10 h8 i-z10 A10 B8 C-Z10 AA-BB10 CC8, aa-ll10 mm8, nn8 (a1 blank, a2r prologue of St. Jerome, a6r Old Testament, aa1r New Testament, mm8v colophon, nn1 register printed in red and black, nn8v blank). 600 leaves (of 610, lacking first blank, a2-8, and nn1.8, the missing leaves supplied in photographic facsimile). 47 lines and headline, double column, printed guide-letters. Type: 105G. 9-line initial opening the New Testament in blue and green heightened with silver, vine decoration forming partial border to same leaf in red, blue and green heightened with silver (trimmed), 6- to 8-line book initials in interlocking red and blue, 2-3-line chapter initials in red or blue, yellow capital strokes. (Outer bifolium in most quires and a few other leaves rehinged, several leaves damaged and repaired, affecting text in only a few, some staining, small wormholes in final quires, some offsetting of the painted initials, probably through light damp.) 16th-century blindstamped calf over bevelled wooden boards, two brass fore-edge clasps (rebacked, new endpapers), probably a Bohemian binding. FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF THE BIBLE IN CZECH. The text follows an ancient version revised by the reformer Jan Hus and his followers, especially Martin Lupác, including the Epistle to the Laodiceans, and was printed under the auspices and partly at the expense of the civic authorities of Prague with the help of the university professors. Leaf F10 was mistakenly reprinted on G1; it has been deleted by a contemporary owner and the following psalms correctly renumbered in manuscript.
