Lot Essay

The oil painting for which this is a study was executed in 1872 and is in a private collection in England. It was recently exhibited in San Remo at the Pallazzo Borea d'Olmo, Figurative Arts between the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries in Western Liguria, 8 April - 21 May 2000, catalogue p. 31, illustrated in colour. Lucy Madox Brown was trained by her father and became his studio assistant, painting parts of his pictures under his instruction. His style had a enormous influence upon her work.
