Lots 26-35 The follow lots are from the collection of a descendant of Lucy Madox Brown and W.M. Rossetti (who married in 1874). Lucy Madox Brown was the daughter of Ford Madox Brown and William Michael Rossetti was the brother of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. All of the drawings except lot 30, which is framed, were previously housed in one folio. We are grateful to Mrs Virginia Surtees, Angela Thirwell and Mary Rossetti Rutterford for their help in preparing this catalogue.

Lot Essay

This small collection of studies includes drawings by friends of the Rossetti family. David Scott was the brother of William Bell Scott about whom William Michael Rossetti: commented 'a painter of much superior mark [to W.B. Scott] ... some of whose ideal and historical inventions were better known to us and sincerely admired' (see W.M. Rossetti, op. cit., vol. 2, p. 396).

John Polidori was William Michael Rossetti's maternal uncle. He was Byron's travelling physician and author of The Vampyre, 1819, a Gothic horror story that became a best seller and was turned into an opera by Heinrich Marschner. W.M. Rossetti edited The Diary of Dr John William Polidori, published in 1911.
