Lot Essay

The study on the verso of the present work is one of more than fifty sketches produced by Sutherland for his monumental canvas, The Origins of the Land (1951; Tate Gallery, London; see D. Cooper, The Work of Graham Sutherland, London, 1961, pl. 115). The painting was commissioned for the 'The Origins of the Land' Pavilion at the Festival of Britain, South Bank, London, 1951.
