BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN HANDWRITTEN LYRICS FOR "E STREET SHUFFLE"
Circa 1972
Three sheets of lined notebook paper with handwritten lyrics to the song 'E Street Shuffle' that appeared on The Boss' 1973 album titled "The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle." Penned in various colors of blue, black and red ballpoint ink as well as in pencil, this work-in-progress displays many cross-outs and minor changes along with notes in the margins like rainbow/radio, rondeau/torpedo, zero/volcano, gigolo/rider and 462-1657 Holland Tunnel under South St old slip East St under for Avis. Consigned by a woman whose mother personally obtained these lyrics from Springsteen himself as they were friends, this manuscript is significant because 'E Street Shuffle' was the song that inspired the band name for the next decade. It also refers to the street in Belmar, New Jersey where pianist David Sancious' mother lived.
