Lot Essay

Born at Ipswich, Samuel Henry Alken was the elder son of Henry Alken senior, one of a large dynasty of sporting artists. In both these paintings the reins are shown passing through the side terrets. This became general practice in coaching after 1835 and since mail coaching had largely ended by 1846, a date of around 1840 for the pictures has been suggested.
