Lot Essay

Silversmith, a gray colt, was foaled in 1949 by Captain Jinks out of Last Scamp. Bred by William P. Phelps of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, he was acquired by Paul Mellon from Morton W. Smith in 1953. Ridden by Paul Mellon, he was Grand Champion of the Virginia Trail Riders Association 100-Mile Ride and winner of the Heavyweight Class, with the high score of 98 points out of 100, against 37 other horses at Hot Springs, Virginia.
