The sitter is identified in the Leeds Catalogue of 1902 (op. cit.) as Sir Conyers D'Arcy, Lord D'Arcy and Conyers (1571-1654). Stylistically the portrait appears to date to c. 1630 which makes this identification unlikely on the basis of the sitter's age. The sitter would appear more likely to be Conyers D'Arcy, eldest son of Lord Conyers and his wife Dorothy, daughter of Sir Henry Belayse, Bt., of Newborough, who was created 1st Earl of Holdernesse in 1682.
