Perhaps a portrait of Agrippa, the man of middle age, the wavy hair brushed forward, with comma-shaped locks framing his broad forehead, the brow knitted in concentration, the eyes convex with heavy upper lids, his full cheeks with deep naso-labial folds, the thin lips pursed

Lot Essay

This head closely resembles the portrait of Agrippa (d. 12 B.C.) known as the Gabii type of which there are four ancient copies known. For the one from the Forum of Gabii now in the Louvre see no. 22, p. 54-55 in Kersauson, Catalogue des Portraits Romains, Tome I, Portraits de la République et d'epoque Julio-Claudienne.
