A PAIR OF ROMAN BRONZE LION HEAD HANDLES
Circa Early 3rd Century A.D.
Each a roundel with a well-modelled facing lion head in high relief, the manes each a mass of rayed wavy locks, with incised comma-shaped locks on the forehead and around the edges of the face, a deeply furrowed brow and bulging lidded eyes, the hair incised on the long barrel-shaped nose, with deep nostrils, the rounded cheeks with curving whiskers, the lolling tongue protruding between the fangs, a separately-cast ribbed ring hanging from the mouth, each preserving an iron pin on the reverse
