VALLEY FORGE: EMERGING FROM A LONG WINTER WITH THE PROMISE OF PAY

Laurens gives the auditor of Army Accounts in Valley Forge some promising news: "...Within the present Inclosure you will receive an Act of Congress of yesterday establishing the Salary of the Auditors of the Army Accounts at five Dollars per day & forage for a Servants Horse whilst in Camp. I beg Sir you will do me the favour to communicate this to Major Clarke with the addition of my Compliments." Throughout the extremely difficult Valley Forge winter encampment few Continental troops had been paid, compounding their misery due to lack of provisions, quarters and clothing.
