BLANDIN, Philippe Frederic. De l'autoplastie, ou restauration des parties du corps. Paris: Germer-Baillière, 1836. 8o. (Some foxing and light marginal browning.) Contemporary quarter-calf, marbled boards (joints rubbed).
FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM of the first treatise on plastic surgery in general. First published in the same year as a thesis, and also appearing in Répertoire médico-chirurgical et obstétrical, 1836-37, vol. IV. The full title translates as "Autoplastic Surgery, or the restoration of parts of the body which have been destroyed by borrowing from other parts more or less distant". The author developed a number of new surgical techniques for use in rhinoplasty, and is known eponymously for "Blandin's glands". Zeis criticised the work for its bias against the achievements of German surgeons. Garrison-Morton-Norman 5743.1; Waller 1106 (thesis edition); Wellcome II, 176 (journal edition).
